Babies Needed for UMass Boston Research on Infant Development
The UMass
Boston Baby Lab, led by Dr. Zsuzsa Kaldy and a team of researchers, is
currently recruiting infants, toddlers and children between the ages of 5 to 42 months to participate in
studies about language learning, short-term memory, and visual and auditory
development.
The lab has designed a baby-friendly version of the Memory Game, where cards are shown face up (on a computer screen), then turned face down. As in the original game, the goal is to find matching cards. Since babies are too young to follow instructions, researchers use an eye-tracker to see if they look toward the matching card (even though it is face down). Then, fun animations are used to reward babies when they pick the correct answer. Researchers have found that babies as young as 10 months can play the game with three cards.
Visits
typically last about 30 to 60 minutes. Participants are offered $20, free
parking and a small thank-you gift.
Location: Integrated Sciences Complex, 100 Morrissey Blvd., Boston. To
